The Kings Speech Poster Review
The title of the film is placed directly in the centre of the poster therefore the viewer cannot miss it because it draws their eye to it. The use of capital letters gives off a masculine feel, reflecting the male characters in the film and the images of them who are on the poster. As the title is in a gold font, this links to their royalty, jewels and money, foreshadowing their glorious and rich life. Above the title, there is text stating the two male actors including in the image on the poster, “Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush”. In the image, Colin Firth appears to be facing the camera giving direct eye contact to the viewer, but he seems to be facing away from the balcony, the public. This gives a slight message to the viewer of the storyline. Geoffrey Rush appears to be facing the balcony and the public which shows his confidence reflecting the fact that Colin Firths character has no confidence when speaking in public during the film. Colin Firth is wearing smart clothing, the jacket including gold buttons and cuffs, showing the continuity of colour, his royalty and importance. As the background of the film poster shows the view from Buckingham Palace, it informs the viewer that it is indeed an English film and most probably filmed in England.
Towards the top of the poster quotes are included which give a positive view on the film, and tell the viewer why they should watch it, influencing them, making them feel as though they will be missing out if they don’t see it. The stars attract the viewer’s eye, enhancing the positive quotes about the film. At the bottom of the film poster other text is included in white, this shows it is not as important but is still further information about the film. It includes further actors in the film and other relevant information in a smaller font.
Poster review from War Horse
The main feature on the War Horse film poster is the image. This informs the audience of who the main characters are in the film. This image has purposely been displayed on the poster to influence the audience to watch the film. As the character and horse are so close together it hints some kind of relationship between them, which of course links to the film, but the audience don’t know this which makes them want to know about their relationship. Both the horse and the character are looking in the same direction making the viewer want to know what is so important in the direction they are looking. This links into the film as both the horse and character end up heading in the same direction, therefore this is a hidden message which the audience would understand once they have seen the film. The character is purposely wearing colours such as beige and light brown because it matches well to the horse, linking them together. To continue with this colour scheme, the sky is a mix of dark oranges and light browns along with some light blue colours which are bright and allow the horse hair to stand out and show the detail.
The title on this poster is shown in a solid brown colour to enhance the masculinity throughout the film shadowing the character and horse. It is placed directly in the centre of the poster as it is where the viewer’s eye is drawn to first. “Separated by war. Tested by battle. Bound by friendship.” The use of these short sentences at the top of the poster is almost like teasers to the audience. It gives them little information about the film, but enough for the audience to know the basics which makes them want to know more about it, what happens during the film, and the ending, resulting in them going to watch the film.
The creator/producer of the film has purposely been included on this poster not only for information but also because it will again influence people to watch the film. This is because the producer is well known, and known for good films which have been a success. If a producer previously makes successful films, then the audience assume this film will be good too.
At the bottom of the film poster it includes other information about the film, but this is smaller text because it isn’t relevant to marketing the film or encouraging people to watch the film. The only piece of text at the bottom of the poster which stands out is the time at which the film will be released. This stand out to the viewer against the smaller text because it is in capital letters and placed in the centre, drawing the eye of the viewer. Also the white text could relate to Christmas time linking to snow.
